Anthony Hamilton hails from Charlotte, North Carolina where he honed his vocal abilities in his church's choir. After high school, he moved to New York to pursue a recording career. He was noticed by Andre Harrell who signed Hamilton to his Uptown Records. Hamilton released his debut album XTC in 1996.
