The Vermont based group formed in 2002 when Matt Burr noticed Potter performing at St. Lawrence University. They coined the name Grace Potter and the Nocturnals the following year and released their indie album Nothing But the Water. While the release wasn't a national hit, the band went on to receive nominations at the Boston Music Awards in 2005 for Best New Local Act and Best Local Female Artist. The band returned to the studio and released their sophomore set This Is Somewhere in 2007.
